Salies de Bearn: the sait city

This little town owes its famé to its natural sait source which influenced the course of its history: it was discovered when a wild boar was found, near to the source, with its fur covered in sait crystals.
Since then, Salies de Bearn takes pride in its natural treasure: an endless source of sait Thermes de Salies de Béarnwater renowned for its health factors and promotion of well-being. Today it belongs to nearly 600 Salisiens called the Part-prenants, a privilège maintained since 1587.
Two districts sit next to one another: the older part, which resembles a snail shell, winds itself around the natural sait spring. Hère you will find typical 17th and 18th century houses built with timber framework filled in with a type of mud and straw mixture. The narrow, pretty lanes overflowing with flowers and houses whose supporting struts actually sit on the rivers edge. The river Saleys flows through the heart of the town, winding around the Sait Muséum, Borough House and Art and Tradition Muséum.
The second, the thermal district, found just a few sîeps away, offers a very différent side to Salies. Old régal hôtels and Palaces, snap-shots of the Post-Napoleonic era, are built near the mauresque style thermal spa centre. The bandstand and the Hôtel du Parc which can be found sitting next to Salies Casino, complète salies everlasting charm. The 12-hole golf course can be found on entering salies and the Mosqueros leisure centre on exittng (Caresse direction). The horse riding centre can be found on the road to Sauveterre, on the path of Saint Jacques de Composîella. Salies de Bearn sits of the Pays Basque and Bearn border. The Bearn, birth place of Gaston Febus, the médiéval crusades, Jeanne d'Albret, mother of King Henry IV, King of Navarre and King of France, where history and religion are closely linked and allows its visitors to discover its richness in thousands of ways.
