The house:

The St Martin presbytery was built between the 12th and 15th century, the same time as the neighbouring St Martin's church. It was altered and made bigger by Abbot Lacoarret, uncle of the famous béarnais poet Al Cartero, between 1850 and 1900. After the death of the Abbot, the Doctor Lacoarret became the new owner and stayed there, using it not only as his home but bis surgery too, untill 1922.

His widow then sold it on to the diocèse who then turned it back to its original function: a presbytery, to which it remained until 1993. Left to ruin from then on, the diocèse sold it in 2000 to a private owner, who then later sold it on to Madame Tarnus in 2004, even though it still had to be renovated. After two years of rénovation, this magnificent building is ready to welcome you.

On the path of Saint Jacques de Compostetla:

Situated on the path of Saint Jacques de Compostella, La Demeure invites pilgrims to stay the night so they may continue thier route, via Hôpital d'Orion or Sauveterre, refreshed and filled with new energy.

The church:

St Mertin's church was built at the foot of the Sigue hill (or otherwise known today as "le pain de sucre"). It's most ancient work cap be dated as far back as the 12th century. It was made bigger in the 15th century, now boasting a new gothic look. Taken from the Catholics in 1569 to be used by the protestants, it was restored in 1743 and more recently in 1979. On the lower side, the adored statue of Christ is considered to be miraculous.

Who is Saint Martin?

Officer of the impérial Horsegard, in service in the North of Gaule (ancient France) where he distinguished himself by his manner of service to both his country and the poor, polished the slave's shoes and didn't hesitate to eut up his own coat to clothe the poor. Picked out by the Abbot of Poitiers, Martin then finished his military service and went to meditate on an italian island. When he later arrived in Poitiers, he created the Ligure monastry and was called to Tours to heal the sick.
His ambition wasn't to shine at the head of the faith, but to convert the whole of Gaule to his new adopted religion, in which he does humbly. Crowds of followers corne to listen to him and later convert. He then founded the Marmoutier Abby. Dressed simply in his tattered clothes, he met monarchs and the emperor Maximim, firstly as a monk, then as a mediator. Patron on France, his fête takes place on the 11th of November, Anniversary of the Armistice, the end of the first world war.
